Economist Baki Atılal, emphasizing the food inflation, pointed out that cherry prices which are 40 liras for the producer are sold for 750 liras in the markets.
During his recent appearance on CNBC-E television, Atılal mentioned that the price of one kilogram of cherries reaches 120 liras when the product, purchased from the producer at 40 liras, reaches the wholesale market, and this price can climb up to 750 liras in retail markets.
Stating that food inflation in Turkey continues to remain at very high levels, Atılal expressed that the effects of the frost incident that occurred 2 months ago are no longer present and should not affect prices.
“Consumers are paying the price of food inflation”
Atılal pointed out that consumers are burdened with a serious cost, saying “Even though I am not guilty as a consumer, I am the one paying the price.”
What is the current situation of food inflation?
According to the current official TURKSTAT data in Turkey, the food inflation is at a level of 33 percent, especially felt much higher by low-income citizens due to the significant role of food in their shopping baskets.
Food inflation had reached a record level of 103 percent in November 2022.
Many citizens are having difficulty in accessing essential food items such as fruits and vegetables.
